Kristen Burns, RD, LD

I am a registered and licensed dietitian who graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Nutrition. Upon completion of my internship and national certification exam, I moved to California to work as a clinical dietitian in a hospital concentrating on cardiac rehabilitation patients. I returned to Austin to start my own practice focusing on weight management and food sensitivities.

My practice also caters to developing plans and educating patients with digestive problems, prenatal nutrition needs, diabetes, and heart health issues. I completed my Physical Fitness Specialist certification from the Cooper Institute in Dallas in 2002 and became certified in FirstLine Therapy in 2006.
My approach to diet counseling includes the following key points:

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!!
This is the 1st and MOST IMPORTANT step toward success! You have to believe that you can and will succeed in your goals. Do not let doubt, fear, or external factors control or sabotage your efforts. Use only positive words and phrases. Repeat these to yourself daily.

“I CAN lose weight.”
“I CAN succeed.”
“I CAN stay on my program.”
“I CAN choose healthier foods.”
“I CAN incorporate exercise into my busy schedule.”

WEIGHT LOSS = CHANGE
Stop making excuses! Obesity is NOT a fact of life. Take responsibility for the situation. Realizing that your weight is a function of your behaviors allows you to take back control. YOU are the ONLY one in control of your food and exercise choices. Do the things that will help you succeed.

- Do not buy unhealthy, tempting foods
- Commit to your plan
- Journal honestly and thoroughly
- Do this for YOURSELF

A HEALTHY DIET IS BALANCED
Our bodies NEED nutrition to function efficiently and meet the daily demands we put on ourselves. Steer clear of diets that are not focused on this simple fact. Any diet that cuts out or puts extreme restrictions on entire food groups is unhealthy and possibly dangerous. Your BASIC needs include:

- LEAN PROTEINS
- HEAHLTHY FATS
- HEALTHY CARBOHYDRATES
- VITAMINES AND MINERALS
- WATER

EDUCATION & FLEXIBILITY
Eating healthfully does not mean eating perfectly. In fact, flexibility and education are KEYS for long-term success. Although I use guidelines, we will build your specific diet around your needs, your goals, your lifestyle, and your REALITY! Your plan has to work for YOU, not somebody else.
